Pentangle이 불러주는 House Carpenter라는 이 곡은 굉장히 널리 알려진 스코틀랜드 포크곡중에 하나로, House Carpenter이외에도 The Daemon Lover 혹은 James Harris라는 이름으로도 알려져있습니다. 같은 가사내용에 대해서 House Carpenter라는 제목과 The Daemon Lover는 잘 매칭이 안되는 제목이기도 하네요. 일단 제가 제일 좋아하는 버젼은 영국 포크그룹이었던 Pentangle이 불러준 버젼이예요. Pentangle버젼의 흥미로운점은 시타를 사용한건데, 다른 가수나 그룹들과는 꽤 다른 느낌을 줍니다.



아래 가사가 있기는 한데, 내용은 한때 왕자와 결혼할수도 있었다고 생각하는 여인이 이제는 목수와 결혼해서 살고 있습니다. 근데 그런 그녀앞에 옛남자(이건 버젼마다 조금 틀려요)가 나타나서 자신과 함께 떠나가자고 유혹을 합니다. 그녀를 행복하게 해 주겠다면서. 그래서 그녀는 아이와 남편을 버리고 그 남자를 따라 배를타고 도망을 가게 됩니다. 그런데 얼마 지나지 않아서 그녀는 아이가 너무 보고싶고 남자에게 다른것 다 필요없고 아이만 다시 한 번 더 보게 해 달라고 합니다. 하지만 그들앞에 기다리는건….

대중음악이 그렇기도 하지만 포크 음악이 다루고 있는 영역중에 하나는 그 음악이 만들어졌당시의 도덕적 가치를 보여주는데, 이 곡에서는 결혼한 여성이 다른 마음을 먹고 가정을 버려서는 안된다는 이야기를 하고 있는거네요.
