다른 음악들도 마찬가지지만 포크 음악의 경우도 다루는 내용을 몇 개의 주제로 나눌 수 있는데, 오늘 골라본 Cruel Sister라는 곡은 질투에 대한 곡입니다. 영국에서 포크 음악을 수집해서 정리한 Francis Childs의 목록중 10번에 이름을 올리고 있는 이 곡은 보통 The Twa Sisters라고 불리우는데, 유래는 17세기이전까지 올라갑니다. 최초의 기록으로 남아있는건 17세기 중엽 정도고요. 많은 포크 곡들이 그렇지만 꽤 많은 버젼이 존재해서 영국에서만 20가지 이상의 버젼에 조금씩 변형된 스토리를 가지고 있는데 핵심적은 스토리는 다음과 같습니다.

어느 바닷가에 자매가 살고 있었습니다. 언니는 검은 머리에 어둡고 동생은 금발에 밝은 성격이었어요. 두 자매는 같은 남자를 사랑하게 되었는데, 그 남자는 동생을 사랑했습니다. 결국 질투에 휩싸인 언니는 동생은 바닷가로 데리고 가서 그녀를 바다에 밀어넣어서 죽입니다. 죽은 동생의 시체는 바닷가를 떠돌다가 악기를 만드는 사람에게 발견이 됩니다. 그 사람은 그녀의 뼈와 머리카락을 이용해서 하프를 만들었는데, 그 하프가 스스로 노래를 부르면서 무슨 일이 있었는지를 이야기한다는 내용입니다. 뭐, 언니 결혼식에 가서 노래를 한다는식의 변형도 있고요. 어째든 언니의 죄는 밝혀지고, 죽임을 당하는게 대부분 버젼들이고 일부 용서를 받는다는 이야기도 있다고 합니다. 뭐... 질투하지 마라... 혹은 질투로 실수하지 마라... 이런 내용입니다.

이 곡은 유럽에 꽤 퍼져있는데, 특히나 북유럽쪽에 널리 퍼져있어서 스웨덴 같은 곳에는 120가지 이상의 변형된 버젼이 발견된다고 합니다. 그 중에서 Folque라는 그룹이 부른 곡은 다음과 같습니다.
