이 글은 예전에 다른 곳에서 썼던 글입니다. 서울대 에타글보다보니 생각이 나서 옮겨봅니다. :) -- 먼저 밝히자면 나는 운동권이었던 적이 없다. 수박 겉핧기도 아니고 수박밭 근처 지나가다 숨이나 쉬어본 정도나 되나 모르겠다. 지금 생각하면 내가 운동권이라고 생각했던 선배들조차 운동권이었나 의문이다. 그러니 이 제목은 사실 낚시나 다름없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 다른 적절한 제목을 못찾겠으니 그냥 이렇게 쓴다. 학교마다 다를지 모르지만, 우리 학교, 우리 과에서는 딱 우리 학번이 마지막 운동권 세대였다고 생각한다. 물론 그전부터 운동권은 약해져있었지만, 딱 우리까지는 그래도 운동권이 주류, 인사이더고 아닌 사람이 비주류, 아웃사이더였는데, 우리 밑으로는 그게 역전되었달까. 대학에 처음 입학했을 때, 2학년 선배들은 너무나 친절했고, 멋있었고, 똑똑했고, 어른같았다. 3학년 선배들은 더더욱.. 나와 동기들은 선배들을 존경했고, 동경했고, 그들이 이야기해주는 모든 것에 깊이 심취했다. 입시를 위한 지식 외의 새로운 지식, 공부하는 샌님들로서 다른 동년배들보다도 어쩌면 적었을 사회에 대한 관심, 제도권에 대한 다른 시선에 심취했다. 나는 여러가지 민중가요를 배우고, 율동을 배우고, 그것들을 좋아했다. 아직도 가끔 시위현장을 지나갈때 아 저노래 아는데 저노래 좋지 생각나는 것들이 있다. 그런데 왜 우리 학번은 선배들에게 그걸 배울때 배우는 걸 싫어하지도, 배운 노래와 율동을 하는 것도 싫어하지 않았는데, 무슨 거부감이 있었던 것도 아닌데 왜 우리는 후배들에게 그 노래와 율동들을 가르치지는 않았을까? 우리끼리 MT가면 술먹고 밤중에 기타치면서 부르기도 했던 노래들인데 왜 아무도 후배들에게 가르칠 생각은 안했을까? 진심으로 의문이다. 나만 그런건가? 다들 사실은 배우기 싫었었나? 그런것도 아닌것 같은데 묘하게도 반이든 학회든 우리는 아무 생각없이 나름 즐겁게 선배들과 소통하면서 배웠던 것들을 우리가 선배가 되었을 때 후배들에게 가르치지는 않았다. 우리가 안 가르치니 후배들은 더더욱 모르는 거지. 그러다 보니 요새 학생들은 다만세를 부르나보다. 선배들과 4.19.마라톤을 뛰며 머리와 팔에 띠를 두르고 구호를 외치고, 왠지 모르게 집에 와서는 머리띠와 팔띠를 책상 깊은 곳에 숨겨두고 부모님이 보시면 어떻게 하지? 하고 혼자 심장이 쿵쾅댔던 기억이 난다. 크크크 누가 보면 뭐 화염병이라도 숨겨둔 줄 알겠네. 지금 생각하면 정말 아무것도 아닌데 19살의 나에게는 무언가 대단한 일탈같았던 모양이다. 하지만 학우들과, 동지들과 팔짱을 끼고 스크럼을 서봤던 기억은 지금 생각해도 뭔가 가슴 한구석을 간질간질이는 뜨거움이 있다. 2002에 느꼈던 감정이 그거랑 좀 비슷한 느낌이다. 세미나를 위해 마르크스 책을 읽어보고, 무슨 말인지 명확히 이해 못하는 상태에서 선배들이 논쟁하는 걸 지켜보고, 멋있어...! (지금와서 생각하면 병x같지만 멋있어 일지도 모르지만 암튼 그때는) 했던 게 생각난다. 어느날 술자리에서 당시 삼성에서 맹인견사업지원하는 사업같은게 있었는데 그에 대해 노조도 못만들게 하는 x같은 삼성에서 사람은 죽이면서 개한텐 돈을 들인다는 욕을 듣고 당황했던 기억이 난다. 그래서 그건 그거고 맹인견 사업은 아무튼 장애인 돕는 거니 좋은 일 아니냐고 했다가 결국 넌 출신성분이 부르지아지라서 이해 못한다는 선배의 일갈을 듣고 벙쪘던 기억이 난다. 아 아마 그게 내 환상에 그어진 첫번째 금이었을 거다. 대학 1학년 처음으로 참가해본 농활은 정말 여러가지로 좋은 기억이다. 생전처음 논에 맨발로 들어가봤고, 모와 피를 구별하는 법을 배워봤고, 농사일이 얼마나 빡센 일인지 겪어봤고, 파리들이 헤엄치는 식초를 아무런 거부감없이 뿌려먹는데서 문화충격을 받았으며(덧붙여 더위도 먹은 상태라 이후 다 토함) 농촌아이들의 순박함과 사랑에 감동받았고, 완전히 어두운 밤하늘의 수많은 별들과 개똥벌레와 고요함과 그 농촌마을 안에서도 존재하는 빈부격차와 빈익빈 부익부, 청년이 없는 현상, 부모는 없이 조부밑에서 자라는 아이들, 높은 도수의 2리터들이 페트소주를 퍼드시는 어르신들, 왜 마을회관에 모여 앉았을 때 벽에 기대거나 허리를 구부려 앉으면 안되는지 이해할 수 없었던 것, 담배피는 선배들이 담배를 구할 수 없게되자 꽁초를 말아피우거나 신문지에 꽁초를 분해해 말거나 담배농사 짓는 곳이라 떨어져 마른 담배잎 주워온걸 신문지에 말아 피우려다 생난리를 피운 일이나 여학우들이 아무도 밥을 지을 줄 몰라(말로만 듣던 3층밥이 만들어짐..전기밥솥인데 어떻게???) 나와 몇몇 남학우가 계속 밥당번 했던 일이나-_- 떠나기 전에 돼지를 통으로 구워 열렸던 마을잔치나. (아 그냥 농활의 추억이라고 이것만 쓸걸...좋은 추억많았는데) 하지만 그보다 어르신들의 의식화를 위하여 반을 나눠 의식화 임무를 맡았던 선배가..어느 집에서 말빨로 그야말로 처참하게 '발렸던' 일이 특히 기억에 남는다. 그때 난 확실히 알았다. 내가 존경하고 동경했던 선배도, 그런 줄 몰랐던 나도 선민의식에 빠져있었다는 것을. 열아홉 스물 스물하나의 애송이들이 고등학교때 공부잘하고 좋은 대학 다닌다고 '무지렁이' 농촌 어르신들보다 지적으로 뛰어날거라, 그것도 훠~얼씬 뛰어날거라 자신하고 있었다는 사실을. 그 분은 귀농하신지 오래 되지 않으신 분이라 하시더라. 하지만 그게 중요한 게 아니지. 선배가 그분에게 논쟁에서 발렸다는 사실 자체보다도, 그 사실을 엄청나게 놀랍고 기이한 일로 받아들였다는 것 자체가 우리의 어처구니 없는 오만이 드러났던 거다. 지금 이 나이 먹고 생각하니 그 아저씨는 이 꼬꼬마들이 얼마나 귀여웠을꼬. 진심으로 부끄러웠던 기억이고, 진심으로 고마운 기억이다. 이게 내 환상에 그어진 두번째 금. 나는 아동반이었어서 아이들과 놀아주면서 정이 듬뿍 들었고, 헤어질때 울면서 내년에도 꼭 다시오기로 약속했는데, 내가 2학년때는 농활기간에 몸이 아파 참석을 못했다. 그래서 미안하다고 편지도 보내고 후년에는 꼭 가겠다고 약속했는데.. 농활에서 학생들과 농민들 사이에 성희롱분쟁이 터져서 학생회와 농민회 사이에 서로 결별을 선언했고 마을과 학교의 결연이 깨져버렸다. 그래 난 그때 그자리에 참석은 안했으니 무슨 일이 있었는지 알 수는 없다. 그러나 그 전에 참석했었던 술자리를 생각하면 솔직히 그 마을 어르신들이 심한 성희롱을 했을거라고는 생각하지 않는다. 학생들 대자보 내용을 봐도- 이쪽으로 와서 술한잔 줘봐라, 예쁜 학생이 따라주니 술이 더 맛있구만 이 얘기가 - 그래 우리 세대에서 학교 선후배 사이에 일어났다면 성희롱일 수도 있겠지만 - 세대와 지역문화를 생각하면 그걸 그런 식으로 받아들여야 하나 의문이다. 술자리에서 이쪽 저쪽 오가며 이야기하고 한잔 주거니 받거니 하고 당장 내가 갔을 때도 나도 어르신들 아주머니들께 이리 가서 한잔 따르고 받고 저리 가서 한잔 따르고 받고 잘생긴 총각이 따라주니 더 좋구만 이런 얘기도 많이 들었다. 내가 갔던 해에는 같이간 여학우들도 그걸 기분나쁘게 받아들인 친구는 없었다. 그분들에게는 그냥 덕담이고 칭찬이고 친해보자는 제스쳐였다. 봉사하러간 농활이고, 연대하러 간 술자리였을텐데. 뭐..문제가 되었던 그날 그자리엔 내가 없었으니까 단정지을 순 없다. 같은 말이라도 분위기가 중요한 거니, 내가 갔던 해와는 다른 분위기였을 수도 있으니까. 하지만 마을은 안바뀌었으니 어르신들도 그때 그분들이실텐데. 성희롱 사과대자보를 써붙이라고 하던 학생회. 유감스럽게도 결연이 깨졌다던 소식. 내 환상에 그어진 세번째 금. 이후 나는 운동권선배들과 서서히 멀어졌고 동아리 활동만 열심히 했다. 우리 만화동아리에서는 동아리활동으로 일본 애니메이션 상영회를 가끔 했었는데 (당시엔 이런 상영회가 유행했는데 지금 다시 생각해보면 이거 짤없이 저작권 위반각이다..?) 집에 미니 프로젝터가 있던 나는 프로젝터 담당이었다. 학교에서 빌려주는 거대 프로젝터는 그 크기와 무게도 엄청나고 (무려 비디오테이프!가들어가는 VCR과 스피커가 탑재되어 있는 여행가방 크기의 쇳덩이인 프로젝터..) 빌리는 절차도 까다로워 우리 동아리가 작은 프로젝터를 이용해서 상영회하는 것을 보고 이런저런 동아리에서 프로젝터를 빌릴 수 있냐고 물어보곤 했다. 나는 별생각없이 흔쾌히 동의해 주었는데 몇번 빌려줬더니 빌려달라는 횟수도 점점 늘어나고..(아니 작은 프로젝터라도 집에서 들고오는게 편하진 않거덩) 빌려줬다 받은 뒤 나중에 우리 상영회 하려고 보니 램프가 나가 있었던 적도 있었다. 틀림없이 전에 빌려준데서 쓰다가 램프나가게 했을 텐데-_-(램프는 소모품) 램프 나갔다고 얘기하면 물어줘야 될까봐 그랬나. 암튼 말도 안해서 우리 상영회 망칠 뻔했다.. 급하게 문제의 거대프로젝터 대여해와서 하긴 했지만. 빌려준거랑 우리 상영회 간격도 멀고 해서 그냥 넘어갔었다. 그러다 어느 운동권 동아리에서 또 프로젝터 빌려달라고 했는데 솔직히 이제 귀찮기도 하고 해서 거절했었는데 나름 친분있는 선배가 부탁해서 빌려줬다. 그런데 반납할 생각을 안해서 다 쓰셨으면 달라고 했더니 동아리 공용 사물함에 넣어놨으니 니가 가져가면 안되냐고 비번알려주겠다고 문자를 보내서 좀 짜증이 났다. 아뇨 가져다 주세요 라고 답장을 보냈다. 그런데 몇시간 있다가 혹시 너 프로젝터가져간거냐고 문자가 오네? 뭐래 이것들이.. 그렇다 없어진거다.. 스블넘들. 동아리 공용사물함에 들어있던 물건이 없어졌으니 그중에 누가 훔쳐간거지. 이게 무슨 쪽팔리는 일이냐. 그런데 참 나한테 미안하다는 소리는 하는데 어떻게 해주겠다는 소리는 아무도 안하더라. 이게 어쩌잔건지. 미안하다 소리로 퉁치자고? 참..선의로 물건 빌려주고 없어진 내가 굳이 물건 어떻게 해주실거냐고 말을 꺼내야 하나? 그랬더니 어떻게 했으면 좋겠니? 라는데 진짜 참.. 당시 그 프로젝터는 아버지 물건이기도 하고 수입품이라 같은 물건을 구할 수도 없었다. 나는 당장 내 동아리 활동에서 빈번하게 그 물건을 쓰고 있었다. 그래서 그나마 그 물건과 비슷한 프로젝터를 하나 찾고(크기가 더 커서 쓰기엔 더 불편..) 그 물건 값이 80만원 정도였는데 없어진 프로젝터는 중고니까 40만원만 달라고 했다. 솔직히 이걸 내가 찾고 이 얘기를 내가 해야했단 거 자체가 엄청 짜증났는데 뭐 선배태도는 더 짜증나더군.. 마치 내가 무슨 폭리라도 취하는양. 그래서 40만원 받기로 했다. 그런데 지금 형편이 어렵다고 10만원 주고 다음에 준대서 그러라고 했는데 와..진짜 나머지 30만원 중 20만원 받는데 3년걸렸다. 그것도 진짜 나 쪼잔한 놈 되는 기분 맛보면서. 그리고 10만원은 그냥 잊어먹었다. 생각하다보니 열받네. 아니 동아리 행사로 빌려다 쓰고 동아리 사물함에서 없어졌으면 뭐 내가 도둑을 찾으라고는 안하겠지만 동아리 전체에서 갹출해서 책임져야 할 일 아닌가? 운동권 동아리 학우 선배들이 뭐 넉넉한 집안들은 아니었던 건 안다. 하지만 10명 넘는 그 동아리에서 그 30만원을 못모아? 후배 물건 빌려다 잃어버려놓고? 그것도 지들중에 누가 훔쳐간건데? 쪽팔린 줄 알아야지.. 당시 우리학교 한달 과외 시세가 40만원이었다. 지금도 그렇다더군..물가는 엄청 올랐는데. 아무튼 누가 한달 과외만 뛰어도 갚아줄 수 있는 돈을 그 운동권 동아리 전원이 모르쇠로 후배 쪼잔한놈 만들더라. 출신성분이 부르지아지인 놈 물건은 빌려 쓰다 잃어버려도, 자본가계층(?)놈 재산은 훔쳐다 팔아먹어도 정당하다 생각이라도 한건지. 내 프로젝터..내 50만원 ㅠㅠ 금가있던 환상을 산산조각 낸 해머링. 이것들도 이젠 기억이고 추억이다. 나의 운동권의 추억..
